The Not-so-Hidden Megatrend: People Determining Their Own Software at Work!

Grass-roots IT – hodgepodge and security nightmare, or the trend that will finally bring good user experience to the enterprise? Let’s think this through – with some of the most seasoned observers of our industry on this not-to-be-missed panel.

Some estimates see employees spending more than half their workday on devices and apps that they themselves have chosen. Some threads that we are looking to get into:

  • How should companies respond? How do they keep cohesion?
  • How do you build software products for this environment?

The Future of Energy Storage

Keeping the lights on with clean energy

Imagine for a moment that we have built enough wind and solar power plants to supply 100 percent of the electricity a region like California or a country like Germany consumes in a year. The continuing rapid cost declines of wind and solar power generation assets make it possible that ambitious energy targets can be met at costs competitive with fossil fuels. However, experts agree, without energy storage it will be impossible to get beyond 80% renewable energy. The variable character of wind and solar power makes it impossible to guarantee sufficient supply of energy 24 hours a day. Energy storage goes far beyond the use in electric vehicles. It is the key to a transformation of the way we generate and consume electric energy. Besides enabling the replacement of fossil fuel power plants, storage has a wide variety of other benefits, for utilities, grid operators and private and commercial users. Our expert panel will discuss topics like:

  • What is the roadmap for more storage integration? Germany vs California, what can we learn from each other?
  • If the case for energy storage is so clear cut, why don’t we see more of it? What are major hurdles?
  • Silicon Valley: Innovation Hub for the world. What is the impact of entrepreneurs/startups?

This panel discussion is organized in cooperation with WATTS & WINE, an event series of inspirational talks and networking all around the energy space and beyond, hosted by innogy New Ventures LLC.

  • Sila Kiliccote, Staff Scientist at SLAC / Managing Director of Grid Innovations at Stanford University
